Gift Aid

How does Gift Aid work?

Donations by individuals to a charity are tax free.

Donating through Gift Aid means that a charity can claim an extra 25p for every pound you give and it won’t cost you any extra. You need to make a Gift Aid declaration for the charity to claim this.

If you donate on-line through our Donate button (on the HOME page) you can do this simply and quickly on-line during the processing of your donation and the donation platform claims the Gift Aid back for us without any charge to us. The Donate link takes you to an external website, www.givey.com, which is a secure social donation platform that collects donations on behalf of our charity where we receive 100% of your donation.

If you sign up for Gift Aid during the donation process we also get a bonus from the tax man. This means that for every £1 you donate we receive £1.25.

Gift Aid Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up for Gift Aid if I don’t claim via the givey.com website?

Either contact us and we will send you out a declaration form to sign or click Gift Aid Declaration to download a pro forma declaration and return it to us.

Will you keep personal information about me?

HMRC requires us to keep a record of your name, home address and post code and no claim is valid without these. However, we will not share these details with anyone else.

Do I have to be employed to be eligible to make a Gift Aid donation?

Not necessarily. In order to be eligible, the tax you pay may include some or all of the following:

  • Income tax (whether deducted by an employer or by self assessment)
  • Tax on a savings account or a private pension plan
  • Any capital gains tax you may have paid or expect to pay eg the sale of shares or a property

The amount of these taxes you pay in any year must be at least equal to the amount we can reclaim on your donations.

Can I cancel my Gift Aid Declaration?

You can cancel this at any time by contacting us. You should also contact us if you cease to pay tax on any income and also if you change your name or move house.

Does Gift aid apply to businesses?

Business Donations

If you are a limited company your business can pay less corporation tax when you donate to a charity. The value of your donations (s) are deducted from your total business profits before you pay tax. (Source: www.gov.uk June 2015)

Business spnsorship of a charity

Charity sponsorship payments are different from donations because your company gets something related to the business in return. However, you can deduct sponsorship payments from business profits before you pay tax by treating them as business expenses. (Source: www.gov.uk June 2015)
